Welcome to 2014. I’ve never been a supersti- tious person, but I must say that many of the vents that took place in my first year to end
in 13 have made me think otherwise.
Product Design & Development (PD&D) has many
great things in store for you fine readers this year,
including the launch of our new editorial advisory
board. Made up of a few familiar faces as well as
many of the industry’s elite ambassadors, the board
will help steer PD&D’s editorial content to make sure
we are providing the most timely, accurate, and vital
information design engineers require to better perform
their day-do-day tasks. The board will meet with the
editorial staff once a month to discuss the state of the
industry as we shape the future PD&D.
Without further ado, I give you the new Editorial
Mike Rainone, Co-Founder, PCDworks
Beloved former Final Thought columnist, Mike has
transitioned to an advisory role with the publication.
Mike will continue
to dip into his experience as co-founder of PCDworks, a
that specializes in product innovation, to share his
views from the new product development community.
Robin Gray, Chief Operating Officer & General
Counsel, Electronic Components Industry
When ECIA was formed in 2011 as a result of a
merger between the National Electronic Distributors
Association (NEDA) and the Electronic Components
Association (ECA), Robin was instrumental in bringing the two groups together. Robin will bring more
than 17 years of experience in the electronics industry
and 25 years of association management to the design
Paul Scheidt, Product Marketing Manager, LED
Paul’s experience and leadership has been important in
developing successful tools for educating and disseminating information about LED lighting. Prior to joining
Cree in 2005, he did both software and hardware testing
at IBM. Paul has an MBA from NC State University
where he also graduated with a dual B.S. degree in
Computer Engineering and Electrical Engineering.
Ron Jr. “Reg” Gustafson, Vice President of Business
Reg brings more than 21 years of experience managing
rapid engineering, manufacturing, and prototyping
projects. His experience ranges from five-axis machin-
ing to sand casting award-winning prototypes to produc-
ing engineering and trade show quality mock-ups, with
a particular emphasis in beating time-to-market goals.
Anna Zevelyov, Director of Business Development,
With degrees from the University of California,
Berkeley and the Georg-August University in Germany,
Anna has extensive experience in international relations and trade. During her career she was IT Director
at a large California non-profit hospital and the COO
at an American education outfit in Russia.
Harry Moser, Reshoring Initiative,
Founder & President
Harry founded the Reshoring Initiative to bring manufacturing jobs back to the U.S. Before that he worked
for GF AgieCharmilles, starting as president in 1985
and retiring as chairman emeritus in December 2010.
He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and
an M.S. in Engineering at MIT in 1967, and an MBA
from U. of Chicago in 1981.
Mike Littrell, President & Founder, C.Ideas
C.Ideas is a rapid prototyping and 3D printing service
organization that has been in business since 1998.
Mike has more than 16 years of experience in the
additive manufacturing industry and a passion for the
development of the 3D community.
Marty Boykin, Ph.D., Director of Consumer
Durables & Tritan, Eastman Chemical Company.
Since joining Eastman in 2008, Marty has worked in a
variety of positions supporting the company’s specialty
plastics business, including application development,
innovation process manager, market development
manager, and sustainability marketing manager. Boykin
received his doctorate in polymer science and engineering from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Tim Balz, Founder & President, Freedom Chairs
Tim is not only the head of the 501C- 3 charity that
refurbishes, rebuilds, and modifies electric wheelchairs, but he is also a freshman at Rose-Hulman
Institute of Technology. Tim got his start in engineering and philanthropy through his involvement
in FIRST Robotics. Given his age and vocation, Tim
will provide PD&D with the perspective of the up and
